The Guatemala Landscape is my favorite in Central America and probably the world. The geography is diverse with numerous volcanos, lakes, and ancient ruins. Hiking and spending time in the national parks are great ways to fall in love with this country. While there, I hiked and photographed Acatenango and Pacaya Volcanos. These are two of the three active volcanoes in Guatemala, there are 37 in total. I captured amazing erupting volcano photos and colorful sunrises and sunsets from above the clouds.
Parque Chuiraxamolo National Park is one of the best places for photographing the outdoors. Multiple volcanos and Lake Atitlan can both be seen from this park. There is little light pollution so it’s ideal for photographing erupting volcanos, star trails, and night photography.
I also visited the ancient Mayan city of Tikal. These ruins have been around for thousands of years and about 80% of it is still buried underground. It’s one of the largest ruins that I’ve visited in Central America. I wandered around for hours, photographing the ancient landscapes and temples.
Semuc Champey was another amazing location in Guatemala that offered beautiful scenery. They have tiered pools and waterfalls carved out by the Cahabon River that flow underground into caves. It’s a good place to spend the day swimming in the pools or just exploring the landscape.
Indian Nose is one of many worthy destinations for photographing the Guatemalan
landscape. The early morning hike is worth it to experience the sun rising over Lake Atitlan and the surrounding volcanos. It’s only about an hour’s hike, but be sure to get there in time to set up and get in position. Â Read my step-by-step guide detailing how I captured these photographsand the gear I used.
